NORBIS Course Preparations

Prepare for the course

Laptops

The course depends heavily on students using their own laptops for interactive work exercises during the course. You should make sure you download and install all the software described below before the course.

R software

R, from http://www.r-project.org/ is one of the main tools at the course. If you do not have extensive experience with R, it is very important that you at least familiarize yourself with basic usage before the course.

Here are suggested tutorials:

  • User-friendly introduction to programming in R
  • Modern introduction to R and RStudio
  • To use R effectively, you need a suitable editor. We recommend using RStudio for this, and many of the demonstrations during the course will be in RStudio. So please install RStudio before the course. Alternatively, a good text editor will work. See recommendations below.

Windows users must also install RTools!

After having installed R and RStudio, download the test-script from the Github repository and run it in R/RStudio. This will install and test all the necessary packages. You can also clone the entire repo as it includes all the scripts and slides for the presentations.

Other software to be installed before the course

  •  PLINK. Version 1.9 is probably best for our use
  • A text editor, for instance Notepad++ (for Windows), Kate (multi-platform) or gedit (Linux)
  • Where to search for help?

If you need any help, try asking your local R-guru, or checkout the local help groups:

  • RLadies Bergen
  • RLadies Oslo
  • Oslo UseR!
